Real Madrid release designs for new stadium
The home ground of football club Real Madrid is to undergo a drastic redevelopment scheme at the hand of von Gerkan, Marg und Partner (gmp-architekten) with L35 Ribas. The announcement was made by the club’s president, Florentino Perez.
Perez explained: “We want to turn the Santiago Bernabéu into the best stadium in the world and to create a better football experience for the fans. The best stadium in a unique location that will be a global symbol. The stadium remodel is a strategic drive towards modernity. Building and raising the stadium was a challenge in its day. Santiago Bernabéu paved the way and we became the leader in sports venues.”

Santiago Bernabéu in Madrid, Spain was designed by Manuel Muñoz Monasterio and Luis Alemany Soler and opened in 1947 with capacity for more than 75,000 spectators (seated and standing). It was originally called El Bernabéu but was renamed in 1955 in honour of Real Madrid’s former chairman Santiago Bernabéu Yeste.
The redevelopment plans feature a retractable roof and ‘intelligent skin’ with renderings depicting an immense media screen projecting match footage onto the façade. Concerns have been raised as to how the club will fund the project, with reports that naming rights will be sold to raise money.
Founding partner at gmp Volkwin Marg has stated that his goal for the stadium is ‘to transform it into the most advanced and developed twenty-first century stadium. This building is undoubtedly the most important project of our careers. We had in mind a Madrid landmark and we’ll continue to defend the club and the values of Real Madrid’s history. It’s a true work of art.’
