Located in a residential neighborhood of London, the project concerns the design and construction of a side return extension that redefines the relationship between the existing house, the lounge area and the rear garden. The initial brief from the private owner focused on improving the functionality of the ground floor while introducing more natural light and a stronger visual connection with the outdoor space.
Our architectural approach aimed to create a bright and fluid transitional space that acts as a natural extension of the existing living areas. By reorganizing the layout and introducing a carefully designed glazed envelope, the extension transforms what was previously an underutilized side passage into a key spatial element of the house. The new addition enhances both circulation and spatial continuity, creating a seamless connection between the lounge, kitchen and garden.
A defining feature of the project is the wrap-over glazing system, which allows uninterrupted visual continuity from the sky above to the landscaped garden at the rear. This architectural gesture not only maximizes daylight penetration but also visually expands the interior space, making the ground floor feel significantly more open and connected to the surrounding environment. The transparency of the glazing creates a dynamic interplay between interior and exterior spaces, enhancing the everyday experience of the house.
Overall, the project demonstrates how a relatively compact residential extension can significantly transform the quality of domestic space. Through careful spatial planning, strategic use of natural light and thoughtful material selection, the extension successfully enhances the everyday living experience while respecting the architectural character of the existing London home.
